Re-Basing 25mm to 32mm using Base Adapters - Tutorial

$

Hello Readers, a few of you may of had the same conundrum as me when GW changed it's SM bases from 25mm to 32mm, well, I think the 32mm bases look better but the question is, can I be bothered to change the back catalogue of my army, a whopping 145 marines to the new size? That will take ages and I hate basing... until I saw the Tabletop Adapters kickstarter and thought, why not give it a go, and if it's easy, at least do the Characters - they deserve bigger bases!
Step 1 - file the surface smooth and get rid of any basing materials that will foul the new adapter.
Step 2 - glue the adapters to the rim of the base, I used poly cement, pushing firmly, one at a time was easiest. I placed the gaps at the sides of the model so the front facing will have a nice smooth finish.
Step 3 - fill the small gap either side with liquid greenstuff, when dry, file smooth. Repeat if necessary until the join is seamless. Don't worry about the top seam, it will be covered by the basing material.
Step 4 - apply PVA glue to the top rim, or whatever medium you use to base. I use modelling sand. Leave this to dry, preferably overnight - start the next batch whilst you wait...
Step 5 - apply the basing material, this hides the unsightly rim and seams and just needs to be painted the same as the rest of the base.
Step 6 - Paint and Varnish the base as normal, excellent results in 5mins prep time and 5min painting time, not forgetting the overnight drying time for PVA, but the production line/batch process can be easily done. I may consider doing the remaining 144... maybe.

A great product, I hope you have found this tutorial useful and somewhat answered those questions you may have had about the basing issues of 25mm to 32mm or not. Check out Tabletop Adapters, their kickstarter deals end 1 Dec, so get in whilst they are cheaper.

Weemen at Warhammer World Pt1 - 6000pt Battle (Pic Heavy)

The Weemen visited Warhammer World on the Sunday after Blogwars X, and along with our friend Steve, we decided to have a 6000pt a side, Xenos/Chaos Vs Imperials. It was a variation of Capture the Relic with a centre Relic worth 10VPs, your own deployment Objective worth 5VPs but if captured 15VPs. Lord Halfpenny and Siph were fielding their BlogWars forces SM and AdMech with the addition of a Fellblade and Xiphon Fighter and Fire Raptor plus Marneus Relicgar.

6thDegree and Steve had their BlogWars forces CSM and Orks, plus a Stormblade, Fire Raptor and a mighty Warhound Titan, led by Abaddon the Despoiler.
The mighty Fellblade and Sicaran Battle Tank near the home Objective
The Orks on the home Objective and mighty Warhound
Turn 1 Devastators and Grav Centurions Drop Pod Assault destroy the enemy Superheavy Tank
The Warhound speaks back on the Kastelans and Attack Bikes
The Chaos and Ork meatshield to protect the Warhound from Turn 2 drop pod Skyhammer Annihilation Force armed with Multi-Melta and Grav Cannon Devastators
Turn 2 Imperial Air Force arrives.
The Skyhammer falls short of the Warhound Melta Range
On the flank, the Orks and Dark Mechanicum Kastelans mop up the Sternguard and Grav Cents
The Warhound makes a whole lot of 5++ Daemon Saves!
The Iron Warriors Fire Raptor replies to the Imperial incursion of the airspace.
Stormboyz arrive in the rear of the Imperial lines
After failing the Warhound charge on the Landraider, it disgorges its cargo of Centurion Assault Squad, the Imperials get their charge in destroying the Warhound with Siege Drills in a flurry of attacks and survive the subsequent meltdown!
Marneus walks on to secure the home objective
With the loss of both Superheavies, the Imperials advance on the Xenos Heretic Objective
The Stormboyz attack the rear lines
Abaddon and Termies and 3 Squads of Obliterators in the rear lines test the Imperials but it takes Marneus in combat with Abaddon to lay them low.
Final outcome Xenos/Heretic Objective secure by Tech Priest and Centurions
 Fellblade secures the Centre
Scouts retain the Imperial Objective

A great monster smash up Apoc type game with lots of cool toys. Steve was heard to mutter, 'I need a Stompa...' and we all agreed that Warhammer World was an excellent venue, another battle will be planned...

Next up, our visit to the amazing Exhibition Halls and the great Miniature displays, Dioramas and some Armies on Parade too. A great place to pick up some WHW exclusives too, I bought the SM Command Tanks and a special Exclusive part for my big future project...

Lord Halfpenny at Blog Wars X (Pic Heavy)

What an event Blog Wars X was - thanks to Alex from over on fromthefang for arranging the event again. This was my 5th visit to Blog Wars, and thoroughly enjoyed every time. This was the last Blog Wars event, however Alex is returning with a new event in 2016, count us in!

As previously mentioned, I'd opted to go for a pure Space Marine list, with the focal point being drop pods. Having seen the rules for the Skyhammer Annihilation formation, I knew I had to try it! Thus, a force of 2 squads of 5 Devastator marines, 4 x Grav and 4x Melta, with 2x 5 man assault squads formed this hard hitting formation. The special character for the force was Tigurius, the plan being to utilise up close and personal psychic powers, with support from scouts and a Thunderfire. Centurions and Sternguard were also used to add to the hard hitting first wave of drop pods. An additional 5 man squad was included in another drop pod to secure objectives towards the end of the game.

I was pretty unsure how I'd do, I had 7 brand new units that I hadn't used and often I've found that  new units often fall before doing anything major in their first few games.

We'll see...

Game 1, Ultramarins VS Eldar

The first game saw me draw my last opponent at Blog Wars 9, Peter, this time with Eldar and not the Necron's smashed through my Knight and Dark Angels force previously. I hadn't played against Eldar since I was at school, so this would be an eye opener, especially when Pete mentioned the '19 D weapons' words.

Key Points
  • Pete wins the roll off to go first, placing his 3 Infiltrators - via his warlord trait within my deployment zone, including WraithKnight.
  • Turn 1 see little action from the Eldar
  • Sternguad and Dev Marines taken out by WraithGuard D fire
  • WraithKnight taken out by Tigurius and Centurion sergeant in Combat
  • Eldar slowly eradicate the marines force
  • Both Spiritseer and Tigurius suffer perils of the warp and die and consecutive turns
  • Peter takes victory by killing the remaining scouts
Final scores Ultramarines - 857, with 2 SVP Eldar 1950, with 3 SVP

From the game I took a couple of points, firstly, Eldar D weapons are horrible, one of my Drop Pods took 18 HP from a single round of shooting - enough to fell a Reaver! Also, the Skyhammer is best used as a single strike force, aimed at a single point with my other drop pods-this game I split them apart, and they didn't maximise on the amount of damage inflicted on the turn they arrived.

Game 2 - Ultramarines vs Imperial Guard and Space Marine Allies

Battle 2 saw me playing Matt Calow who played at the same club as Peter, Space Marines are my normal opposition with Siph's Relictors, so I was happy with how to deal with them, the threat was with the 3 Vindicators and the Imperial tank squadron. My plan was simple, take turn 1, and aim to destroy the vehicles..

Key Points
  • Ultramarines didn't get first turn
  • Assault Centurions and tactical marines arrive via deep strike, thunderfire gunner is killed
  • Skyhammer arrive- smashing throught the imperial lines- Dev fire takes a full squad and 2 hull points from Pask's leman russ
  • assault troops assault the leman russ' killing them both with the eviscerator.
  • Sternguard destroy 2 vindicators in melta/plasma fire
  • Centurions open fire - killing the Assault Centurions
  • Tigurius kills the Captian in single combat
  • Matt's Vindicator planned to blow a combat squad of assaults marines into pieces - however the scatter saw the vehicle kill its self, and the hydra!
  • The game ends with the Ultramarines holding all 3 objectives.
Final Score, Ultramarines 30, with 3 SVP IG/SM 0 with 1 VP
I really enjoyed the second game, the tactics I wanted to try worked, seeing the Skyhammer doing the damage early in the game, and then the remaining force mopping up. It was useful to see squadrons in force, and to see how venerable they are to alpha strikes, the Sternguard killed 2 simply through weight of fire.

Game 3 - Ultramarines Vs Dark Angels

Battle 3 saw me draw Chris, another guy from the same scene as Pete and Matt. (I bet they were cursing me). This time seeing me against Dark Angels, the force I used with Knights at Blog Wars 9. This force included 3 Land Raiders, and lots of terminators, how would the Skyhammer fair?

Key Points
  • Ultramarines have turn one - seeing the arrival of the 4 drop pods, the heavy fire from the Dev's, plus the Sternguard and Centurions sees 2 Land Raiders wrecked and a Razorback destroyed by the Assault marines with the eviscerator.
  • Terminators charge into the Centurions and Tigurius, seeing several rounds of combat with other terminators and Ultramarines piling in.
  • Ultramarines take it to the Dark Angel's and kill off all the remaining terminators and Ezekiel. The Dark Angels were left to one squad and razorback - which were killed in Turn 5.
Final Scores: Ultramarines 15, 3 SVP Dark Angels 5 and 1 SVP
A really good test for my final battle, I was really happy to see how the force worked against heavy tanks and infantry. This game was under maelstrom points, I really enjoyed the tactical play required whilst trying eliminate the opposition. Unfortunately I had a rush of blood to the head, and destroyed Chris' remaining marines, what I should have done is left them for a turn to potentially have scored more VP's in the next round.

3 great games. I really enjoyed each game, and was helped by the spirit of the guys I played. Thanks guys! Overall I finished 13th out of 50 - and claimed the top ranked Weeman!

Legio Astorum Imperial Warlord Titan - WIP #1 - Dominus Victoria

And so it starts, a long journey into the world of large resin models and airbrush painting... all new to me, the resin working not so, but this thing is on an industrial scale, it will require basing for stability, pinning in the joints and magnets at the arm weapon points...
Here is the start of Warlord Dominus Victoria (Latin for Lord of Victory) of the Legio Astorum, to accompany the Reaver Honorum, Warhound Canis Praetor and Warhound Canis Bellum. What you are looking at is a world of resin - but not all of it. I have not bought the arms yet as I am waiting for the Forge World Tech Adepts to produce some more variation before choosing my weapons. One Volcano Cannon I am sure, but we will see. The new rules for Titans in CC makes this a thing to last on the battlefield and I am sure six D-shots just from the carapace weapons will make a mess on the Apoc battlefield!

I will construct and paint this beast myself. Seeing how I go with the details and a paintbrush and airbrush later, the other's had star treatment from Slayer Sword winner Richard Gray, so I may tap him up to do a few armour plates or airbrush the head the gorgeous shaded Yellow to match my others? I may continue myself... we will see.

I don't promise a quick construction or finish date, but I will blog my progress here, albeit more successful than my Reaver progress... (sent to Rich to do!) This construct is mine.

For hints and tips, see Dave Taylor's You Tube channel, and check out Titan Owners Club resources tab for 30mm Madness blog diary of his! And our very own 6thDegree Warhound diary.

And for the owners of any OFFICIAL FW Titans, none of those Chinese knock-offs (undermining our hobby!), check out the Titan Owners Club and post your pictures and progress on there! Become a Titan Owners Club Member - my four are there!

Relictors Space Marine Centurion Sergeant Honour Roll

Following the success both these Centurion Sergeants and their squads had at Warhammer World and BlogWars X, I decided to award both an honour marking to celebrate their squads achievements :)
The Assault Centurions charged 6thDegree's Warhound Canis Ferrum on the battlefield at Warhammer World and destroyed him in Close Combat and afterwards, avoided the worst of the Strength D apocalyptic meltdown and survived unscathed to go on to flame the last remaining Ork character who was claiming his home Objective, allowing the nearby Tech Priest Dominus to claim the objective and secure 15VPs. Well Done Squad Mortis - I have fashioned a Titan 'T' from two transfers on the AdMech transfer sheet the Sergeant now wears proudly on his left Shoulder Pauldron.

The Devastator Centurions destroyed a wayward Imperial Fist Grav Centurion Squad in their first game at BlogWars X, and in the final game managed to down an Imperial Knight Crusader, stripping 4HPs to help secure the victory for the Imperium. This Squad's Sergeant now proudly wears an Adeptus Mechanicus Cog and Skull honour marking on his left Shoulder Pauldron from the AdMech transfer sheet.

Do you like to 'award' heroic feats for your weemen? Let me know their greatest victories in the comments! Thanks for dropping by.

Legio Astorum Imperial Warlord Titan - WIP #2 - Bathtime

Hello Readers thanks for dropping by. So an update of sorts for Warlord Dominus Victoria of the Legio Astorum. Firstly, how does one clean and de-grease the mould release agent from the resin parts, well, a big bath of warm soapy water, followed by a second bath of Flash Kitchen de-greaser mixed in the bath, and for really stubborn bits, a soak in neat Fairy Power Spray... this stuff melts paint, so don't keep soaking unless you keep an eye on it. It is really good stuff for shifting that mould release agent - just rinse with fresh water and dry on completion. Paint can't adhere to the mould release agent - the really shiny bits of the resin that feel greasy to the touch, so this first step is important.

I use an old toothbrush to scrub every piece, it takes ages, but preparation is key. Without the cleaning process, your painting will rub straight off...
What does a Warlord Body with Head and Carapace Weapons look like.... well before construction like this! This is a few hours of filing and sanding and cutting with a hobby razor saw to get the excess vents off and sand the pieces ready for construction.
I mustered all the bits against the now-in-technicolour instructions and made sure all the bits were present, not too warped and intact. I am pleased to say only one or two of the largest longest pieces needed some hot water bending, and all were present and intact - FW quality control must have improved.
And if you wondered what offcuts you produce, well, over 2KG worth of vents and sprue! Blimey. Just remember when working with resin, usea dust mask when sawing or filing, resin dust may be harmful if breathed in. Follow the advise given on the Forge World website. I have a selection of tools and clamps I will be using, I'm sure there will be more (coathanger is for steel pins - hacksaw not pictured to cut this!, see more already!)

Anyway, some progress, even if it is all preparation work. Hope this helps someone.

And if anyone was wondering how I come up with the Imperial High Gothic sounding names, Google Translate Latin helps out a lot, but their are High Gothic name gererators out there too for SM and Characters.. I was thinking along the lines of Dominus Mortem (Lord of Death), Dominus Exitum (Lord of Doom/Destruction) or Dominus Victoria (Lord of Victory), Dominus being latin for Lord, and it is a WarLORD just as the Warhound Canis Bellum meaning Wolf/Dog/Hound of War. How do they sound to you? Honorum was straight out of the Siege of Vraks book, along with Canis Praetor, paint schemes to match. Dominus Bellum is the name of Lord Halfpenny's Ex-Warlord, now Imperator Titan!

Hello Readers, Thanks for dropping in, I hope you have been enjoying the Weemen trip to Warhammer World pictures, back to some actual Weemen progress with a small update of some Cult Mechanicus Fulgrite Electro-Priests, another unit I've updated to match my armies but painted by my good blogger buddy Mordian7th.
These had some mixed performances at the recent BlogWars X, I forgot they have FNP and their 4++ save gets better if they win CC. Oh well, I remembered about halfway through the weekend and did okay against 6thDegree and Steve in turn 4 when they finally closed the enemy...
All I have done is updated the colour of the power cables to match other units to green, re-did the bases to match all my armies and a few tinkers here and there, but whole hearted thanks to Mordian7th for another fine painted unit at a great blogger buddy discount price. Cheers man.

The titan WIP continues, fear not, I am really enjoying the scale of the build, it is kind of to celebrate the end of the 6 month mountain reduction pile challenge. 6MMRPC... kind of undoes all my hard work in getting stuff done. ;)
I've kind of failed at that... a trip to WHW means you never walk away empty handed, but it was a great challenge and I did a lot of painting including starting and finishing the Relic Sicaran Battletank which I am very proud of. Thanks for the encouragement SpiderWebofHistory and Daveb.

Cult Mechanicus Kataphron Breachers w/ Torsion Cannons

Hello Readers, here is my latest unit finished up, more Mordian7th good work. A unit of Cult Mechanicus Breachers armed with Torsion Cannons, these nice beauties inflict D3 Wounds or HPs if they successfully wound or Penetrate. Can be a nasty surprise to Imperial Knights!
This is Mordian7th's work, all I did was update the bases to match my own, add a little colour to the faces, not too much, these are automatons after all, and painted the pupils and bionic red eye as most of my bionic eyes are red. Plus a little weathering of the tracks to match the bases.
Thanks Mordian7th, another great unit and they fared okay on the Battlefield at Blogwars X, people targeted them early fearing those cannons thus allowing my Centurions to do the damage...

Legio Astorum Imperial Warlord Titan Build - WIP #3 - Feet/Hip Ball Joints

$

Hello Readers, thanks for dropping by. A little update, my motto when it comes to this build, I want to enjoy the build progress and sloow down on the construction so I don't mess it up, there are some tricky posing decisions to be made and one starts with the feet... As 30mm madness says, it is the journey not the destination, and I agree.
Stage 1 of the build is the hips and leg couplings, the ball joints. This is a simple case of roughing up the surfaces with a blade or I use the tips of the sprue cutters to give more surface area to bond. I am using JB Weld Plastic Weld, so far it is strong - and dries to a firm hold in 5mins, meaning I don't have to hold the toes in place for that long. It is completely dry and hard after 24hrs, so another reason I can enjoy the slow and steady approach. I bought some hobby clamps from eBay, cheap and essential for large resin builds. The instructions say not to glue the Hip Piston Rings, but after a lot of posing and dry fitting, they can be secured, largest nub downwards.
The clamps were essential for this tricky bit.
The pose I require is a fairly upright stance, it is a WarLORD, not a Warhound after all, so I will have a fairly static stance, but with the rear trailing leg just stepping forward, it is advancing as the nigh on unstoppable force of the Emperor's might is it not?? To make this look a little more 'realistic' the back of the foot will be raised slightly, the toes at the front bent up, the trailing toe bend down to ensure maximum stability.  You can see this above and below, each toe and the front of the foot base provides contact with the ground.
To ensure maximum stability and not have 7Kg of titan on the toe joint, I have affixed a 25mm slotta base to bridge the air gap (seen underneath but will be fairly hard to notice in the final model!) this gives more surface area in contact with the ground. I will be pinning the final model on to a base not dissimilar to the other titans to provide maximum stability.
The other foot is the one pictured first, flat and firm ground for this heavyweight beast. In between to toes will be the Foot Plates, these will be glued on completion of painting and clip in place. The instructions say just clip, but I will glue once finished. The toes themselves slot nicely into the slots provided, a generous application of JB Weld into the slot and along the back of the toe ensures a great fit. You can pin these, but I don't think it is necessary. I will pin the foot ball joint, shins, knees and hips later once constructed and dry.

That's all for now. I love this model, it's huge but the instructions are clear for once! Well done FW, at last and in colour!

Adeptus Mechanicus Skitarii Onager Dunecrawler w/ Neutron Laser

Hello Readers and Titan Build Fans, here is my latest offering, not more of the titan, that will appear Friday, but another unit from the bulk blogger buddy buy from Mordian7th! An Adeptus Mechanicus Skitarii Onager Dunecrawler armed with the mighty Neutron Laser and Cognis Heavy Stubber.

As a nod to our own 6thDegree's Iron Warriors, I embelished the base with a holed Iron Warrior's helmet (that'll teach him for wearing MKVII plate instead of MKIII... and a Shoulder Pauldron.
The Onager Dunecrawler itself is Mordian7th's work, great stuff too. I finished off the blue view ports and re did a green power cable to match my own taste, however everything is his good work, thanks Buddy!
This view shows off the nifty Neutron Laser power building up in the coils before release.
And a nice front look, these units on the Battlefield get better in squadrons of 3, with a cumulative 6++ becoming 4++ with two others in close proximity, so I guess I shall purchase two more ;)

Thanks for dropping in and stay tuned for more Warlord Titan goodness, the build is going well.

Legio Astorum Imperial Warlord Titan Build - WIP #4 - Shins

$

Welcome back avid Titan Enginseers, welcome to Part 4 of this series, I hope you find it useful if you are thinking about constructing your own someday.  Here I have roughed up the surfaces of the shin-knee koint before gluing. This will ensure a super strong bond between the two pieces.
I am using JB Plastic Weld, the best in my opinion, quick drying (5mins) until you don't have to hold together, but 24hrs for a complete set. I have hobby clamps for a great help in keeping the parts together for a strong tight seal. Here you can see the two pieces and how they come together to form the Shin.
To ensure an extra strong bond, I am also pinning all the Titan extremities, and the legs will be taking a lot of weight so I am pinning these two pieces, I am using brass rod and more glue to pin. I used wire cutters, not the sprue clippers to cut the rod and at an angle to get in the best pin (Thanks for the idea from 30mm Madness).
Here you can see the place to drill, this will be covered up by the armour plates on final construction.
Here is a picture of the drill bit, an extra long 2.5mm bit, next to a normal 2.5mm bit. This means I will be able to drill through the larger deeper pieces such as the hip ball joint into the hips themselves.
A final check and measure of the pin before glue is applied and the pinning put in place. You can also see I've attached the struts from which the Leg Armour plates attach.
Lastly, a picture of the pin in the hole, test fit before adding the glue, the top surface will be well hidden by armour plates, however a little tidy up and paint over the hole and no-one will know you've strengthened the joint. A perfect length and job well done.

Hopefully you have found this useful. Thanks for dropping in.

Legio Astorum Imperial Warlord Titan Build - WIP #5 - Legs

$

Welcome back Titan Builders and Readers, Thanks for dropping in. So, I finished the shins and the pinning of the shins - so next was the legs. The bit I had been putting off, the legs are very important, they convey movement, they support the beast, they carry a lot of weight and they are fairly limited in the variety of poses if you dry fit them (DO dry fit) you'll see that the piston ring around the hips and the ankle piston pieces will limit the stride somewhat.

Firstly I drilled through each side of the upper knee bracket, seperately to ensure when both holes are done they are central and match up.  Next, using these holes as a guide, mark the inner knee cog both sides and drill through this, halfway from both sides, again to ensure a central hole - this hole is for the most important pin, to prevent any movement forward out of the socket.
Once both pieces are drilled and clean, score several marks into both surfaces to be glued, this gives a better surface for the epoxy resin (I use JB Weld Plastic Weld - recommended BIGtime!) to adhere to. I used the dremel to score marks inbetween the knee socket.
Make sure the pin can go right through the holes you have drilled and cut to length using the wire cutters.
I then glued and clamped the legs whilst they dried, not in an upright or load bearing capacity - wait until the legs are done before attaching the feet. I test fitted the pose several times before committing to gluing. The lower 'nut' tab lines up with the lines around the inner knee cog, this leg is at position 3 for the forward leg, the rear leg will be slightly raised and trailing so position 4 worked best for me. Test fit twice! This is the important part - you don't want your titan to look goofy, stumbling or bolt upright rigid (maybe you might- bolt upright, not goofy!).
Here is the dried leg being glued to the forward flat foot, and here you can see my test pose rig, a Dettol bottle (great paint stripper btw) and a clamp to the hips. Not gluing the hip joint until both feet are attached and dried.
And here you can see the rear leg, foot slightly raised, and if you look carefully, the 'nut' tab is at line position number 4.
Once the feet are fully dried and firm, I drilled into the foot and through to the ankle ball joint a deep hole for a long pin. These are the second most important pins on the titan I think, means the stresses of the weight of the titan will be fully supported and spread out into the foot rather than on the ball joint itself.
And here you can see the pin in the bottom of the foot, up into the ankle. I will cap off all the pin holes with a little greenstuff, but this one is in the underside of the foot so doesn't really matter. The central foot being left clear will give me plenty of surface to pin into the base.

Thanks for dropping by. Next up, finishing of the Legs, pinning and magnetizing the Waist, starting to get real height to this 'miniature' now! Siph.

Mechanicum Castellax Battle-Automata with Multi-Melta #2

Hello Readers, Thanks for dropping by. Another bit of progress in the Mechanicum front, now I have the Taghmata Army book I know what these Robots can do, quite nifty 4W Monsterous Creatures with Power Blades for extra CC attack at base S6 with Rending. Oh and a Multi-Melta, and two Flamers. Nice.
This one is posed more dynamically, rushing forward to meet the enemy. I've used the Ad Mech transfers to link the Mechanicum units with my Cult Mechanicus units.
And here is a shot of the Maniple so far, another Power Blade wielding one to go and two 'basic' Castellax with Mauler Boltcannons. I love these FW kits.

Thanks for dropping in, I leave you with this festive coloured robot and I hope Santa brings you lots of nice Weemen! Merry Christmas from all at Weemen.

Legio Astorum Imperial Warlord Titan Build - WIP #6 - Magnetizing the Waist

$

I hope you all had a good Christmas and Santa bought you Weemen!

So, following the instructions, I had glued the hip ball joints, and departing from the instructions, after some posing of the legs, I glued the hip piston rings in the position I wanted, biggest lug downwards. By gluing the ring, it will add stability and strength to the hip joint and the legs with ten extra points of contact with the legs and the hips in the form of the pistons.

But the titan is so huge, I thought I should make the construction detachable at the waist. I knew from painful experience (Reaver toppled and fell) that trusting gravity was a fools errant, so I bought super powerful magnets 25mm x 10mm with the pulling power of about a small elephant - seriously, I left them near eachother and they flew together chipping one and needing all my strength in my fingers to pull apart without leverage... that will do nicely.
Using the Forstner bit I ordered especially, I slowly drilled out the resin plug, lined with super powerful JB Weld, and glued in the first magnet.
For the Torso base plate, I didn't need to drill out a complete hole, this way the magnets attraction would be slghtly reduced (seriously, don't need all of that pull!) and the magnet would fprever be entombed in the torso and will not pull loose of the JB Weld holding it - not that I think that'll happen, but this gives an ideal pull and an ideal mount.
Before placing the magbet in the recess I applied glue and then held together by the magnets, I applied JB Weld around the top magnet, sealing it in place on the Base Plate.
The hold between the two is more than sufficient to make sure the titan doesn't topple apart but allows some rotation of the waist. and de-construction for transportation if necessary. Ideal.

Legio Astorum Warlord Titan Build - WIP #7 - Finishing off the Legs

Hello Avid Titan Fans, I have been busy finishing off the titan legs, I made sure I slowed the build down and double checked the parts before gluing, and after each glue, I set it aside for 24hrs to properly fix, it's firm fixed after 5mins but I want super strong fixed! Here is testing the pose, a Dettol bottle was the perfect height to rest the hips on to allow lining up and testing.
I bought a simple spirit bubble level to check the pose, an upright set of hips and waist will not put stress on on or the other leg so they share the top weight of that huge torso and arms.
One final check before gluing commenced.
Once glued, I clamped carefully, avoiding moving the joints, this was quite fiddly and took the time that the glue starts to harden, once this happened the job became easier as the clamps wouldn't try to straighten the angles etc.
Here is a pic of the scoring I did on the hip ball joints before gluing, to maximise thesurface area to glue and form a better join.
I did the same to the hip sockets too. I just use the back edge of the sprue clippers.
And here is the result, a nice manly walking pose with the legs slightly apart to allow passage of the toes past eachother. The pistons (12 of them) were done over a course of 3 days, each day doing a set of pistons and leaving the legs to set before the next set, otherwise they might fall out of the sockets. These pistons were cut to size for the top of the legs where the gap is smaller, test fit before cutting and make sure you site them into the correct sockets. These pistons further support and steady the hip sockets so now there is 7 points of contact for each leg to the hips, hence the earlier step of gluing the hip piston ring.
The trailing foot slightly lifting from the rear as the leg is bought forward.
From the side, I chose mainly for height, the rear leg toes in line with the rear of the front foot, walking, not running but not shuffling either - this is why dry fitting before hand and double checking is important.
And the other side
The next day when completely firm, I drilled right into the hip ball and hip piece with an extra long 11cm drill bit. This will ensure the pin enters the hips as well as the hip ball joint. A second pin could be used at 90 degrees to this one or in paralell if you worry about rotation, but I think the glue is actually sufficient to hold it by itself - the pinning is more for my peace of mind.
Once the pins are glued in place, the horizontal gyros are clamped and glued over the pin site to finish off the legs, well with the exception of the armoured toes and armour plates which will further support the foot ball joint to really make the titan safe and steady.

Thanks for dropping by, I hope someone finds these step by step posts useful. Cheers.
