Squaduary - Week 3 Progress - RTB01 Tactical Squad

Hi Readers, thanks for dropping by and checking out my progress. So, a little more done this week, two more Marines finished and a third at the highlighting stage. That's now over the halfway mark, 6 finished, 4 to go. Should have these all finished and showcased by the end of the month, easy. Thanks Squaduary, great motivation from reading other participants progress and seeing their squads come together.
For those who might be wondering what Squaduary is, its all about building and painting a squad in February and is a hobby related event being run by Stepping Between Games. A great way to get motivated to paint some of those miniatures lurking in the cupboard of doom To-Do pile.
Here's a close up of the newest members to this RTB01 squad, the old school Missile Launcher and a Bolter marine. I added a Bolt Pistol to the leg of the Bolter marine, and some spare missiles to the heavy weapons trooper. Missile Launchers are very meh... at least in my battles, but the rule of cool won for this squad, I had the bits so he had to have one.
Right, that's any tricky bits now completed, just Bolter armed marines left. It's a shame that when these were glued together half a tube of glue was over-used on each marine! They have needed a lot of filing and smoothing to get to this stage, but I think they look quite passable.

Cheers for stopping by, Siph.

Terrain and Scenery - Gamemat.eu Pre-Painted Desert Rocks Set

Hi Readers, thanks for dropping by. I saw these reviewed on Winters SEO You Tube channel, (BTW, check his channel out, great battle reports!) and I already had some Containers and the Battle Mat from Gamemat.eu, so I knew they are a good company. If you are in Europe or UK, check them out for Battle Mats and Scenery!
So this arrived, only a week after I ordered which is not bad at all from Europe.
The terrain is very well packed for transit.
Each piece is well protected and individually bagged.
Out of the box, the full set.
Here is the biggest Mesa piece. Space Marine for scale. A nice LOS blocking piece and a flat top for placing those Devastators.
The second largest piece, a Butte. Taller than it is wider, and great for LOS blocking too. Not too heavy, dense resin but slightly hollow I reckon.
Then the scatter pieces of rock, 5x2 sets of identical pairs, each turned around to show the different sides. These are all solid resin.
Two arched formations.
Two tall rock pillars, and the last two scatter rocks.
Two shorter rock pillars, shown next to one of the taller columns, and a Space Marine again for scale.
So, here is the whole set, that is a 6x4 foot table and this set alone provides almost enough scenery. Add a few buildings or some more terrain, a desert temple or something and you are good to go. Straight out of the box and a decent paint job, 9/10 for Gamemat.eu, the dropped point is only for price. I think its quite fair, decent detail and decent paintjob, but it might be out of some peoples budgets.
Oh, and the underside of the resin is smooth and painted so everything is steady and easily moved and won't damage your playing surface. Great product, I'm a very happy customer.

Cheers, Siph.

Reaver Titan - WIP #6 - Titan Power Fist

Hi one and all! thanks for looking!

Up next is the Titan arm I've built and really wanted to share the pictures rather than the comparison pics - that will be next, I promise.

I decided to have the option of a Titan Power Fist as firstly I really like the look of it, it fits the old school look of the Reaver I remember with a right ranged weapon, and left arm a CC one. It also looks very similar to one of my favourite moments in the classic 'Transformers Movie (the G1 version, not the new Bay stuff), where Unicron transforms into robot mode to attack Cybertron - there is a close up of his hand  as it smashes into the planet - The Reaver hand has a similar look.
I've built the arm similar to the other arms- with a screw embedded into the arm to then lock into the shoulder mount. This was the key reason I wanted to do the shoulders this way, as the Fist Shoulder doesn't have a ball joint like the others, thus to magnetise it would have meant being more accurate with the placement of the magnets/cutting into the joint etc. I'm happy with the results.
Its a sizeable fist! I've not glued the hand to the arm yet as I am looking at maybe magnetising this joint to allow rotation.

Below are pictures of the fist mounted to the body of the titan.
 The Reaver likes to dance.
This isn't the final pose of the titan, its angled to the right due to the weight of the right arm. Once its fixed into position I am hoping it will be more upright.
Thanks for stopping by!

Squaduary - RTB01 Tactical Squad Completed

Hi Readers, thanks for dropping by and having a look-see. Here is my completed pledge for Squaduary for the month of February.  I had these RTB01 marines sitting about for an age, and another squad since 1989...
For those who might be wondering what Squaduary was, its all about building and painting a squad in February and was a hobby related event being run by Stepping Between Games. A great way to get motivated to paint some of those miniatures lurking in the cupboard of doom To-Do pile. I'm sure it will be a regular feature for upcoming years!
These were painted my usual scheme for the Relictors Chapter. Using Codex Grey/Dawnstone or Army Painter Uniform Grey spray, washed with Nuln Oil, highlighted Administratum Grey.
The Banner stripe denotes a Tactical Squad, and the green colour denote the 4th Company, I already have 6 Tactical Squads for the 5th Company, and one for the 4th Company... quite a few Marines now!
I had to re-arm the Sergeant with a FW Bolt Pistol and the Specialist with a Spellcrow Gravity Gun as a counts-as Grav Gun. The original weapons were damaged.
The Missile Launcher is the original, FW do an updated version if you like this style, I also painted the Missiles yellow to match the rest of the force, and the Sergeant has a few spare reloads.
The second half of the squad have the Bolters, on the left the empty hand was replaced with a modern grenade hand as the pose was a asking for it. The middle Marine has his original Bolt Pistol drawn, They are tiny!
The rear shot showing the Combat Blades and the holstered Bolt Pistols.

Thanks to all the participants of Squaduary for the motivation, and to Stepping Between Games for organizing this great event, cheers. Siph.

Relictors Landspeeder Storm WIP - Getting more for your money

Hello Readers, thanks for dropping by. Keeping to my aim of this year to make a dent into the to-do pile and get some of those units on the table, one of my long purchased loafing boxes was a Landspeeder Storm. Well looking at the kit it doesn't make sense to me to build the kit with all the occupants in it, I prefer the idea of the Pilot and Gunner and an empty crew compartment I can place passenger models in if necessary.
Even a Space Marine would have difficulty staring into the on rushing wind, smoke and haze of the 41st Millennium battlefield, so following my Scout Bikers, these crewmen will have Pig Iron helmets which look great on Scouts I reckon.
That leaves four crewmen that come with the kit who are spare. The first crewman hangs out of the right-hand side of the Landspeeder, with one foot up on a step poses a problem for a base, so I added a rock and voila, one Scout in the field. I've swapped his hand from holding the rappelling lines to a CCW, not shown, off for ease of painting.
The second crewman is sitting on the left-hand side of the Landspeeder, his pose is sitting back but with some wedges (not stilettos honest!) which will be covered by the basing material, his pose becomes a bit more upright, and being the only left handed Bolter wielding Scout, I was keen to use him! He now looks like he is stalking forward.
The third crewman is the Sergeant, he stands looking out of the top of the open topped Landspeeder, but with the addition of a Bolt Pistol instead of a steadying hand, he is now ideally engaged in close-combat with the enemies of the God-Emperor!
The final member of the Landspeeder is sitting back reloading a Bolter but his legs were too prone, one tucked in and one pointing straight along the seat, so I cut his waist and plonked the torso on a spare pair of Scout legs, so now I have a walking Scout re-loading in the midst of battle (shows his lack of experience - fancy a SM running out of ammo mid battle!).

So, four Scouts with different poses, they will look great interspersed into other based Scouts in the field, adding some personality and character to the rank and file. And more importantly, 4 (ok 3.5) more models for minimal cost!

Cheers, Siph.

Hobby Area Lighting Improvements - Daylight LED Lamps

Hi Readers, thanks for popping in. I wanted to share this upgrade with hobbyists out there, specifically UK or Europe based as the supplier is UK based, but I've included the details of the lamps so wider area hobbyists can also do a search on the popular auction sites for the same.
The great improvement over the existing lamps I had is the fact that the light is a "daylight-like" white 6W LED, not warm yellow incandescent bulbs. I have a magnifying lamp in the centre from which I do my painting as my eyes are not getting any younger and I can now actually see those details! It also prevents eye strain. But the other great feature is that these new lamps are clamped to the desk, freeing up loads of desk space where the weighted bottoms used to have to sit. This also means they can be clamped to vertical surfaces or undersides of shelving for those hobbyists with even less desk space.
Here was my older set up, you can see the weighted bottom of the lamp on the right. Much better now. The clamps fit desk thicknesses of up to 1.5in, the height of a standard GW paint pot, the cord is about 2m long
Here's the description and UK seller ID. They are just shy of £20 GBP. Upgrade your lights, totally worth it. Search for - Modern Silver Adjustable Clamp LED Desk Lamp Light.

#MonsterMarch - Week 0

Hi guys - I am aware its been a few months since I've posted (it's only a few months since November 2015 right?) (Ha Ha, few months! - Siph) - but a combination of work and getting married really didn't help getting a little burned out after the Warhound project...

To help me get back into building and painting minis, I thought I would start off with something a little...different... I also don't want to start out with something tiny and intricate, so got something pretty sizeable and fun lined up.

To help motivate me, I am taking part in #MonsterMarch; a community painting challenge set by the Swordmaster of Hoeth blog, who is tasking people to paint up a monster in March this year.

Each week there will be an update and hopefully by the end of March I will have finished the mini (maxi).

The model I am going to be painting is a full-scale Alien Facehugger that I picked up about a year ago but never got round to starting - hopefully will look something a little like this when it's done (it actually won't - I am going for a walking/pouncing pose - but who doesn't love that pic...?)
I'll be updating my progress over the rest of March - so keep your eyes peeled.

Daemons WIP Bloodthirster and Skarbrand

Hi Everybody.

Thank you for swinging by our blog!

The titan progress has slowed a little, I'm looking for a good day to start adding paint to the body. Excited!

However I thought I'd share my other WIP (of which there are many... LH), a couple of Bloodthirsters. I've built one as the Bloodthirster of Insensate Rage, which is the the flying D weapon one. I really like the overall look of the Bloodthirster with the double handed axe. I've gone f true Khorne colours, with the skin a Blood red colour, with black flesh as the wings (picture below with Skarbrand). The armour plating is a combination of silver and gold.
The double handed axe is looking far too clean. This will be getting a few 'blood for the blood god' layers on it for good measure. (Picture Below with Skarbrand's)

The second Bloodthirster is Skarbrand, I've always like the back story with Skarbrand, and had looked to convert him, however the moment the model came out I had to have one!
I'm still in two minds whether to add the chest plate and guards onto the model, either way looks right, I plan to review once all sub parts are painted and then see which looks correct in my eyes..
Again the axes need more blood on them!
Below are the pairs wings, Skarbrand I've opted to go for red skin up to the joint, and then a combination of black with brown- the back story is that his wings were destroyed, and he isn't a flyer- thus his wings wouldn't ever be used- so I went for a necrosed look, rather than a healthy looking red tone- like the rest of him.
Interestingly enough Skarbrand looks good added to the body of the normal Bloodthirster, this could make an interesting conversion maybe? the only issue would be to modify the wings to fit, and to then convert the other Bloodthirster to sit right with Skarbrand's body.
Thank for looking!

#MonsterMarch - Week 1

Week one of #MonsterMarch - check out the Swordmaster of Hoeth blog for all the community updates.

Ok - a bit of background about this model - I got it from a Thai seller on eBay a while ago - I've always wanted a life-sized Facehugger and they are only about £20 - so thought it was taking a punt on.

The quality is hit and miss - I definitely wouldn't advise for a novice builder; the model is made out of vinyl and is hollow, so can be easily heated to reposition it and trimmed, but being hollow means that joins can be an absolutely nightmare to fill if there are gaps (and there are gaps!). The sculpt is pretty good, plenty of detail where you would want it and but obviously not GW standards here. I can imagine lots of these get bought, put together badly, sprayed once and then get binned - but with some TLC, I think they could look pretty good.

Typically - I jumped straight into assembly, meaning I had no unassembled pics - so I will share this one from the seller:
As you can see - the body is in two parts, with eight complete fingers, separate nails and the tail is split into four (understandable - the tail is about 3 feet long...).

Issue one...everything is very straight...not very organic or posed.

The body went together first, a hairdryer was required to heat the parts to get everything meeting and even then, there was a good 5mm gap in places that had to be filled, so out came the greenstuff. Luckily, most of it was around flat areas that I could smooth in, with only a little sculpting required around the 'mouth'.
The tail went together fine, but I left that off until the end.

I attached all of the fingers and nails as they were, before heating the knuckles and bending them. I wanted the Facehugger to look like it was about to pounce, so played with each finger one at a time until I was happy.
Finally, I attached the tail in one piece before heating it and bending to give it a bit of life. I hardly had it kinking round, but even the positioning I gave it was pretty tricky - the vinyl is pretty thick and being hollow, wanted to 'fold' more than 'bend'.
The other good thing with the model is that I should be able to gently heat it once painted and reposition it if I'm not quite happy. Saying that, by the end, I managed to get the model into a pose I was happy with - I have a super secret place I will be placing this once finished - so tested the poses on a few bits of furniture and it doesn't look half bad.

Next update - painting begins!

Necron Destroyers #7 #8 and #9 - Destroyer Cult Finished

So, after a disastrous battle where a Skyhammer annihilated all my AP3 weaponry, (got to hate Drop Pods of Grav Devastators backed up with podding Grav Centurions... hmmm...Skyhammer should at least account for some of the Drop Pod Assault number Pods!) I thought it was about time to up my Destroyer numbers for a nice bonus when I can field a Destroyer Cult.
For these final three Destroyers I wanted a slightly different look to the other six, so I tried a half tone scheme with big transfers on the plain metallic side too. I think it looks great.
I followed the usual reddish gauss energy colours and the new Fulgurite Copper on the capacitor coils.
These finish off the numbers needed for the Destroyer Cult, three squads of three plus the Destroyer Lord. The Cult gains the benefits from the formation (re-roll failed to wound rolls and failed armor penetrations rolls in the shooting phase), combined with re-rolls of 1's to hit because of Preferred Enemy Everything! The only restriction is three units of three Destroyers, one Lord and 0-1 Units of Heavy Destroyers.
So, the Destroyer Cult has now been completed except for the optional Heavy Destroyers using the converted Heavy Gauss Cannons I made. More Immortals, Tomb Blades for the Reclamation Legion bonuses and some eventual dirty Canoptek Wraiths to keep expanding the Necron force. Cheers, Siph.

Roboute Guilliman - Primarch of the Ultramarines

Hi one and all,

Quick post, I've started work on my two Roboute Guilliman models, one the new GW plastic, Lord Commander version, the other the  Forge World 30k model. I think it'll be a good process to do the two models simultaneously and compare the two versions.
 The FW version (Thanks 6th)
The two sprues for the plastic version with the new 'armour of fate'.
There is part of me that likes the idea of converting the two sets, I like the look of the FW pose, maybe with the new backpack and sword, however I'm going to stick with the 2 models as they are.

Hopefully we'll get some good weather so I can start spraying the Reaver titan for next weeks post...

#MonsterMarch - Facehugger Week 2

Into week 2 now of #MonsterMarch and all is going well so far... You can check out other peoples updates on the Swordmaster of Hoeth blog.

Last week I managed to get the facehugger model all built, filled and prepped for painting. Normally in the past the painting steps I have gone through this week would have been done in an hour or two - but a) I'm still not back into my rhythm yet and b)painting something of this scale is pretty tricky - it takes about an hour to do one complete pass of the model - and then there are difficulties like trying to hold the thing. Also - soooooooooo much paint is being used (which isn't cheap when it's all GW stuff...)!

So I started out by giving the model an undercard in Zandri Dust - I have a paint recipe for fleshtones using 'sand' colours, so this was an ideal start.

Next up was a base coat in Tallarn Sand.

At this stage I got a bit confused and forgot my paint recipe - I know all the individual colours, but can't remember the order of some washes/coats - so from here on out we'll see how it turns out...

Gave the facehugger a coat of Reikland Fleshshade and wow - the detail immediately popped and the model started coming into its own.

After the initial wash, the entire model got overbrushed with Tallarn Sand again and that is as far as I've got. Looking pretty good so far though - don't you think?

Next up is another wash and then a few drybrushes and most of the flesh will be finished.

Necron Ghost Ark - or "How I learned to hate line highlighting..."

Hello Readers, thanks for dropping in. Here is the latest and most colourful addition to the Necron Dynasty. A decent transport choice for the Necron Warriors, with repair boosts and durable Quantum Shielding.
The Gauss Flayer Arrays can independently fire broadsides at different enemy units, so this transport is good for driving up in between enemy units and hitting two from the sides, not forgetting Gauss can glance vehicles to death!
I love the look of this vehicle, unique to the Necrons and really cool looking, but the sub-title says it all - oh my, I thought drop pods were bad enough, but this takes the crown - each rib had to be line highlighted, there is no 'inside' to this vehicle, everything including the occupants is on show!
I painted this in sub assemblies, the ribs separately, the Command Throne, the console, the driver, the passengers, the largest crescent and the engine intakes with (now partially obscured) fine gold detailing ankh... but the line highlighting took forever. Some ofthe largest bits were drybrushed but the inner details and ribs were all patiently highlighted.
That said, it gave me a great sense of achievement and satisfaction when finally constructed and finished. I think it looks pretty darn awesome, would I paint another one - I'll wait to see how it performs on the battlefield. But I'm sure I will grab a Doomsday Barge eventually, so more ribs to do in the future. That said not for now, this is a definite one ticked off the to-do pile, its been a long time waiting in undercoated sub-assemblies, feels good to complete it.
Here is a close up of the crew and passengers, and the repair scarabs busy repairing the damaged/wounded exo-skeletons of the embarked Warriors.
And the driver, come Lord overseer whose depleted ranks are getting repaired and back into the fight!
Finally, a scenic shot, thanks for reading this far! Cheers, Siph.

Bloodthirster / Skarbrand WIP #2

 Hi- thanks for dropping by!

Up today is an update on my WIP Bloodthirster and Skarbrand that I posted a few weeks ago.

I'm making steady progress with the two- I' looking at one final level of extreme highlights for the skin to pick up the muscle definition, and then to detail the feet and ankles. The bases needs a final dry brush to highlight also.

Skarbrand's face has had a lot of attention to pick out the detail. I'm still need get the eyes and horns done, I think for the damaged horns I'm going to finish them with a black edge- again trying to show that the horn has necosis,  like I've done with the wings. The good, 'healthy' horns will be completed with a lighter edge as a contrast.
Thanks for looking!

Terrain and Scenery - Rubble - Using those sprue offcuts

$

Hi Readers, if you are like me you'll have plenty of sprue leftovers and those red range rulers from certain box sets. Well, don't throw it all away, use it all to improve your scenery.
Here I have a pot where I occasionally chop up and place bits of old kits, sprue offcuts and now those range rulers I had in a box set and never used. So, recycling unwanted offcuts and range rules...
This provides me with the raw materials needed. Larger 'bricks' from the range rules...
Smaller 'bricks' from the sprue offcuts, I tend only to use the straight bits, not the curved or text stamped bits, there is plenty of straight sprue pieces especially with the Rhino kit! Loads of nice straights, some of which you can save for reinforced iron bars in buildings etc.
To use them, simply pour some PVA (Elmers) glue and then pour over the bricks, this provides the random pattern. Once the glue is dry (about 4-8hrs or overnight) I then liberally apply Plastic Cement where the bricks meet eacth other giving a strong bond. Then spray, paint whatever you do to colour your buildings. These Shrine of the Aquila were sprayed Zandri Dust, washed Agrax Earthshade and drybrushed Ushabti Bone.
Here I have used some rubble to extend the pile of rubble from Battlefield in a Box, on the base of a Pegasus Hobbies Gothic Church building. These were codex dry, drybrushed Administratum Grey.
And finally, some rubble around the ends of the Ruins adds some realism and interest I reckon. These Abbadon Black, drybrushed Grey and the effect  is improved with heavy drybrushes and over brushes of the colours you use for the bases, in this case, Mournfang Brown, Kommando Khaki (not sure of new name) and Ushabti Bone.

Hopefully this is a nice hobby life hack if you didn't know it already ;)  Cheers, Siph.

#MonsterMarch - Facehugger Week 3(ish)

Hi everyone - the final week of #MonsterMarch and I can unveil the last steps and finished work. For everyone else's updates, check out the Swordmaster of Hoeth blog here.

So when I left off, I had gotten down a base layer, initial wash and first over/dry-brush. From there I then gave the model a wash in Agrax Earthshade to add more shadows and darken the overall scheme.

Then it was back to the drybrush steps, first up a dry brush of Tallarn Sand again to take us back to the primary base colour.

Then a lighter dry brush of Karak Stone.

Finally a very light drybrush of Ushtabi Bone - just for some highlights. At this point the skin is pretty much done. I used some thinned blue wash to paint on some veins on the bladder-y bits (??? no idea what else to call them) and brushed again over them with Ushtabi Bone just to make them look like they are below the layer of skin. Not completely sold on the effect - but it looks ok.

For the 'mouth' area, I had been drybrushing the same as everywhere else and just gave it a wash of Crimson Carrionburg and Reikland Fleshshade - which is my go-to wash recipe of red fleshy bits.

The nails were painted in the same body colours - loosely blending into each other.

Once everything had dried, I hit it up with a matt varnish and then gloss varnished the 'mouth' and nails to give the a wet and shiny look.

Job done!

Thanks for reading - hopefully this will get me back into painting smaller models now - we'll see...

Roboute Guilliman WIP mock ups and a third one

Hi Readers! thanks for checking out our blog!

This post is to follow up on my previous Roboute Guilliman post.

I've started building the 2 models, and thought I'd share a few comparisons of the 2, and a few potential conversion mock ups.

Firstly here are the 2 models side by side, the plastic version appears to be quite a bit larger than its Forge World twin.
However the difference isn't so dramatic side by side.
Of the two bases I like the Forge World version, its more 'statesman' as GW like to call Roboute, I would be tempted to use this base with the plastic version if the body position was better- the conversion in last months White Dwarf is nice, but I don't feel its a natural pose, and I'm not keen on the position of the left arm in it.
The swords, well, there is only one winner here..
The left arms are similar, the option to build the heavy bolter under the Forge World arm is an possibility, but then you have a sheath too small for the Emperor's Sword.
The Heads are similar, the Forge World reminds me of 'the head' that I think was in a UK child's programme, 'Art Beat' from the early 90's.

Mock Ups- below are 2 versions with a combination of the 2 models, I do really like the overall look of the model (wrong head- this is the Grey Knights head from the GoS3 set) I am tempted to try and do this version at a later date, but I'd like to have the options of a 30k Guillliman and the 40k version.  But the look and pose I feel looks right for what they are doing with Guilliman in 40k.

Whats that? a third Guilliman??? This is a version I picked up a while ago, which doesn't look to bad as an alternative to the Forge World/GW ones. The kit has options for sword and bolter, or the fists of Macragge (Poor Marneus) or a combination of the two for the 40k configuration.

Genestealer Cult - Purestrain Paint Scheme

$

Hi Readers, thanks for dropping in. I had to decide on a paint scheme for the Genestealers for the Cult. I know the Codex says independent Genestealer Cults are a purplish hue, but that is dull to all be the same and think its a bit of creative fluff manipulation to explain why all the canon genestealers in Space Hulk are purple! But I wanted mine to link in with the reds and khakis of the Genestealer Cult Leman Russ and the infected PDF. So, Hive Fleet Kraken is my favourite scheme for Tyranids and is ideal.
I used the great tutorial over at Tale Of Painters for painting the Hive Fleet Kraken scheme, I love the reds, Mephiston red is a really nice red I'd never used. I subbed out the fleshy Bugmans Glow for some Ratskin Flesh but otherwise matched the tutorial, lovely results, thank you ToP.
This was an old 2nd Edn Genestealer, I have loads of them fortunately and a few of the Deathwatch Overkill ones so a First Curse formation will be on the books...
So, another 19 to do somewhere on the to-do pile! Thanks for dropping by, cheers Siph.

Bloodthirster WIP #3

Hi Everyone!

Here are a few more pictures of the Bloodthirster I'm working on, I've got the wings virtually there, I'm now debating whether to pin, or magnetise them into place, or just to glue them.
Left to do is the face, horns and feet, then an overall final wash/drybrush over the armour panels and then a final dark drybrush over the flames. I'm pretty happy with the way the model is looking, and that the skin tone is what I was aiming for.
Also in shot, is Skarband - a little further behind, but getting there slowly! Hopefully I will get these done within the week.
